Human history is filled with events that simply cannot be explained. Lost civilizations, unexplained disappearances and gruesome murders; every culture has their own tales. There are simply too many to list. But some mysteries are so intriguing that they transcend cultural differences and spark the interest of people from all across the globe. These are the most enduring mysteries of all time.

1. Atlantis – Nearly everyone has heard of the legendary lost island of Atlantis. The Greek scholar Plato first mentioned the island in his dialogues, written sometime in the fourth century B.C. Plato referred to Atlantis as a center of commerce and technology, stating that it existed some nine thousand years before his time. According to Plato, the Atlantean people angered the gods, who then destroyed the great island by sinking it beneath the sea in one day and one night. Many theories exist as to the location of the lost continent, placing it anywhere from Greece to the Bahamas. Others insist that there is no hard evidence that Atlantis ever existed at all, and that Plato merely made it up as a parable. Still, the idea of Atlantis continues to fascinate people even today.

2. Bermuda Triangle – With many strange disappearances, equipment malfunctions and odd sightings, the area between Florida, the Bahamas and Puerto Rico has long been a center of controversy. Over the years, many sea and air vessels have gone missing while traveling through the area, never to be heard from again. Even those who’ve braved the treacherous area and returned tell strange tales of equipment failure, seemingly due to magnetic interference. The question is, what’s causing the interference?

3. Shroud of Turin – Long reported to be the burial shroud of Jesus Christ, the Shroud of Turin is one of history’s most enduring mysteries. The fourteen-foot long piece of linen bears a strikingly clear image of a man with injuries that are consistent with crucifixion, leading many to believe that it is the cloth used to wrap the body of Jesus Christ. Many scholars have attempted to explain the image on the shroud, with theories ranging from painting to chemical reactions to paranormal energy discharges. Though much research has been conducted and many recreations attempted, no satisfactory scientific explanation exists for the image on the shroud.

4. Jack the Ripper – During the fall of 1888, five women were brutally murdered by a terrifying killer who stalked the back alleys of London’s Whitechapel district. From August to November, the killer took five victims, all women, slitting their throats and cutting open their abdomens. At the time, the murderer was referred to as “The Whitechapel Murderer” but we know him today as Jack the Ripper. Jack’s reign of terror eventually ended with the gruesome murder of Mary Jane Kelly. Several suspects were detained and questioned, but all were eventually released for lack of evidence.

5. Stonehenge – The prehistoric monuments known as Stonehenge have baffled researchers for centuries. Long-thought to be some sort of ancient ritual site, recent evidence suggests that Stonehenge may actually have served as a burial ground as early as 3000 B.C. Still, the stone blocks that make up the megalithic structure weigh many tons, leading researchers to question how ancient workers could have moved and lifted them. There have been many theories including everything from lost ancient technologies to extraterrestrial involvement.

Ohio (ChattahBox) Serial killer suspect, Anthony Sowell, is already charged in the murders of eleven women, who he then left around his Cleveland home. But he is now facing charges from a living woman who says he raped her brutally in his home.

The unnamed alleged victim is 24-years-old, and says that Sowell held her in his home and raped her, before she was able to escape.

These charged bring the total against Sowell to 95, with more possible as the investigation continues.

He was arrested last year after a 42-year-old victim escaped his clutches during an attempted murder that would have brought his list of known homicides to twelve.

Prosecutors have promised that they will not rest until every victim is found, and justice is received for each womans family.

Sowell pleaded not guilty by reasons of insanity in December.

We often hear reported on the news stories about people being sent to prison and/or jail. Sometimes it seems those words can be used to describe the same thing, but actually they’re very different in the law enforcement world. When you know the difference between jails and prisons, you can better understand the various sentences people receive, the type of criminal they’re considered to be, and the length of stay the convict will be experiencing.

A jail is usually run by a smaller entity such as a county or city. Jails aren’t meant to house people long-term — such as for many years — but are used for those criminals with shorter sentences. Due to the fact that jails are used for shorter stays, those being held don’t have access to as many amenities and those in prisons. For example, those in jail have access to food, bathrooms, and may possibly be able to have access to a common room where they can socialize. Prison security is much more intense.

Inmates in jails are usually those still waiting to go to trial, those with shorter sentences, people who have been arrested and are suspected of committing a crime, or those who haven’t yet posted bail. After these people have been booked or tried, the criminal justice system will then determine what their future will be and if they’ll remain in the jail or be moved to a prison.

A prison is much different. Either the state or Federal government will run the prison. Prisons can vary on the degree of security, but most are much more intensely secure than jails. Also, due to the fact that those convicts in prison have longer sentences the facilities offered are much more varied. For example, a prison may have a library where convicts can read or study. Additional space, such as an exercise yard, may also be part of the prison. There may be church facilities so those wishing to attend the church of their choice may do so. Finally, there may be even more common rooms for the purposes of socialization.

Prisons are capable of holding many more inmates than jails, which allows for a larger social construct to arise. Just as in society there can be gangs, “families,” and any number of social possibilities. Whether they want to or not, most inmates are drawn into the social climate because they are forced to share a cell. Usually the inmates are arranged according to type of crime. Therefore, those in for lesser offenses aren’t normally housed with those in for violent crime. Also, those who receive a sentence of capital punishment are housed separately from the rest of the inmates as well.

Prison staff members are specifically trained to work with and handle individuals who have committed crimes. They have to walk a very fine line so as not to become too friendly with the inmates. They have to maintain a certain distance in order to maintain order and respect, but they must also be able to interact in order to solve problems which may arise. At times, prisons can become short-staffed because of state budget cuts. For example, the state of California has to cut much of its budget for prisons and prison staff because of their budget shortfall. Of course, these budget cuts have a negative impact on the security and effectiveness of the prison operations.

The effectiveness of jails and prisons is constantly being contested. Some argue that those first-time offenders come out hardened and then go on to commit even worse crimes. Others maintain prison is a place where people receive their just punishment, but then have a chance, if they take it, to improve their lives by taking classes or learning new job skills which will allow them to have a better life once they their sentence is up. Regardless, prisons and jails certainly aren’t going anywhere at anytime in the near future. For the time being, we all have a vested interest in ensuring they are run as efficiently and securely as can be.
